Effects of Implant Alignment on Passive Knee Envelope

چکیده
INTRODUCTION: A successful surgical outcome in total knee arthroplasty (TKA) depends on multiple factors, including proper rotational and translational alignment of the femoral and tibial components. Small variation in surgical alignment of an implant could potentially have a large impact on knee performance. Several authors have studied the effects of tibial and femoral component’s internal-external (IE) rotational alignment on tibiofemoral kinematics; however, the variation in implant alignment and its effects on knee kinematics have not been studied. It is important to understand the relationship and interaction between various implant alignment factors and their resultant effect on post-surgery knee kinematics. The objective of the present study was to measure the effects of variation in the implant’s rotational alignment on the tibiofemoral passive envelope using principal component (PC) analysis.

متن کاملThe envelope of passive knee joint motion.
The purpose of this study is to create an accurate experimental database for the passive (in vitro) freedom-of-motion characteristics of the human knee joint on a subject to subject basis, suitable for the verification and enhancement of mathematical knee-joint models. Knee-joint specimens in a six degree-of-freedom motion rig are moved through flexion under several combinations of external loa...
متن کاملSoft-tissue balancing in primary total knee arthroplasty.
The surgical goal of primary total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is to provide a well-balanced soft-tissue envelope surrounding a well-aligned, well-fixed implant. Some knee surgeons have emphasized that a good outcome in primary TKA is more dependent on soft-tissue management than bone management. Thus, it is imperative that the surgeon is familiar with knee soft-tissue balancing techniques to addre...
متن کاملComparison of Double and Single Leg Weight-Bearing Radiography in Determining Knee Alignment
Background: Knee malalignment is an important modifiable cause of osteoarthritis (OA). Surgical therapeutic procedures depend on proper knee alignment assessment. The purpose of this study was to compare knee alignment parameters between double and single leg weight-bearing radiographs and to evaluate the reproducibility of inter- and intra-observer measurements. Methods: One hundred eight p...
متن کاملWhat is the optimal alignment of the tibial and femoral components in knee arthroplasty?
BACKGROUND Surgeon-dependent factors such as optimal implant alignment are thought to play a significant role in outcome following primary total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Exact definitions and references for optimal alignment are, however, still being debated. This overview of the literature describes different definitions of component alignment following primary TKA for (1) tibiofemoral alignme...
